Calculating or determining your BMI is something that can be done quite easily, and by virtually everyone and even at home.

As indicated earlier, BMI is a number, obtained by comparing your weight and your height. Put crudely, BMI is equal to your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared; i.e. BMI =kg/m²

Step-by-step guide to calculate your BMI at home

Calculating your BMI at home requires you to have 3 basic things

  • A calculator – a very simple or basic one will do
  • Your height
  • Your weight

If you are using the metric system:

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. If you measure your height in centimetres, divide your height in centimetres by 100 to obtain your height in meters.

Using your calculator multiply your height in meters by itself. Then, divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared (that is the answer from the first calculation). The number you obtain is your BMI

For example: Weight = 70 kg, Height = 170 cm (1.7 m)


Step 1: height x height = 1.7 x 1.7= 2.89

Step 2: BMI = 70 ÷ 2.89 = 24.2

If you are more familiar with calculating in the imperial system, that is in feet and inches, then divide your weight by your height squared, and multiply by 703

In this example:

Weight = 180 lbs, Height = 5′ 9″ (69″)

Step 1: 69 x 69 = 4761

Step 2: 180 ÷ 4761 = 0.0378

Step 3 = 0.0378 x 703 = 26.6

What does the BMI tell us?

If your BMI is

  • less than 18.5, then you are underweight
  • between 18.5 and 24.9, then your weight is normal
  • between 25 and 29.9, then you are under weight
  • 30 and above, then you are obese

Thus from our two calculations above, the first person, whose BMI is 24.2 has a normal weight, whilst the second person whose BMI is 26.5 will be considered as being overweight

Know your BMI to help you lose weight quickly

As a word of caution, though BMI can give an indication of how healthy a person is, it cannot be sorely relied upon to determine whether a person is obese or overweight. Other things like amount of muscles a person is carrying and the person’s bone density may have to be taken into consideration before a firm judgement can be made.
